B2B Sales Outsourcing: Outside Sales Help for the Key Accounts That Matter Most

Sales outsourcing means paying an outside company to do part of your selling: building lists, starting conversations, booking meetings or closing deals. Most B2B companies hand over the early stages and keep the closing. If your targets are a short list of large companies, hand the account work to an account-based selling company.

What is sales outsourcing?

Sales outsourcing is any arrangement in which people outside your company do work your sales team would otherwise do. In B2B it rarely means the whole sale. It usually means the stages before a deal exists: finding the companies, finding the people, starting the conversation. You will also see it called outsourced sales, sales as a service or, for technology companies, IT sales outsourcing.

Which parts of B2B sales can you outsource?

Part of the saleWhat you hand overKeep it in-house when
Data and listsBuilding and cleaning contact recordsThe list is short and you know the companies
Outreach and first conversationsEmail, LinkedIn and calls to people who have not heard of youYour buyers already come to you
Account research and committee mappingReading each target company and finding who decidesYou have fewer accounts than your sellers can research
ClosingNegotiation and signatureAlmost always: the buyer wants to meet the people who will deliver
Account managementGrowing existing customersAlmost always: the relationship is yours

When does a company need outside sales help?

Four situations come up again and again.

  • Referrals have dried up. The business grew on introductions and there are no new ones.
  • The founder is still the only seller. There is no time left to open new accounts.
  • A new market. You want clients in the USA, the UK or the Gulf and have no one there.
  • The first sales hire is not yet justified. You need to prove the market before you build a team.

In each case, decide what you need before you choose a provider: more first conversations with many buyers, or a way into a few named companies.

How should an IT services or SaaS company outsource sales?

If you sell projects or software to large companies, your market is a list. Write it down before you speak to any provider. Then ask each one how it would work those accounts: who would research them, how many people in each would be approached, and what you would see each month. A provider that answers with a number of emails is selling volume. One that answers with accounts is selling what you need.

How does Intandemly work?

Intandemly is an account-based selling company, working this way since April 2017, almost ten years. Each client gets a platform and a consultant dedicated to that client, supported by researchers, working a named list of key accounts agreed with you. We open and develop conversations inside those accounts; your team runs the deals and closes them. We do not sell leads and we do not promise a number of meetings. We report on five KPIs: outreach accounts, coverage rate, active buying committees, active conversations and the value of pipeline generated.

General sales outsourcing fits when

  • Your buyers are many and similar
  • One person can approve the purchase
  • You need volume of first conversations

Account-based selling fits when

  • Your market is a list of companies you can name
  • Several people must agree before anything is signed
  • You want to keep the closing and the relationship
