Account-Based Marketing, Explained From the First Definition to a Working Programme
Account-based marketing treats a named company, not an individual lead, as the unit of marketing. You choose the accounts first, then build research, content and advertising around the people inside them. This hub collects every guide, template and tool we have published on ABM, ordered from definitions to running programmes.

Start with the definition, because most ABM content skips it
Most searches about ABM are definition searches: what it is, whether it is inbound or outbound, how it differs from demand generation. The short version is that ABM inverts the funnel. Instead of attracting many unknown visitors and qualifying them down, you agree a list of companies that could buy, then market to the people inside those companies as if each account were a market of one.
That inversion has consequences. Volume metrics such as leads and form fills stop being the score; coverage of a buying committee and engagement inside named accounts take their place. The guides below walk through the definition, the common strategy mistakes and worked examples, so you can tell whether ABM fits your deal size before you buy software or hire anyone.
Where marketing ends and selling begins
ABM literature is written mostly by software vendors, so it tends to stop at the advertising and measurement layer. In practice the programmes that pay for themselves pair that air cover with account-based selling: a person who maps each buying committee, opens conversations and carries the account to a deal. Our flagship comparison of account-based selling and ABM draws that line precisely, and the INTANDEM framework article shows the two running as one motion.
If you are a small team, start with the tiering worksheet and the one-page GTM plan rather than a platform. A list of thirty named accounts, tiered honestly, beats a tool you have not got data for. The templates in this hub are the ones our consultants use with clients, published free and usable in a spreadsheet.

Common questions
What is account-based marketing in one sentence?
ABM is marketing aimed at a named list of companies you have chosen in advance, built around the people inside each one, instead of marketing aimed at whoever responds.
Is ABM only for large enterprises?
No. The method scales down well: a small team can run ABM on twenty to thirty accounts with a spreadsheet, a tiering worksheet and LinkedIn. What does not scale down is buying enterprise ABM software before the list exists.
How is ABM different from account-based selling?
ABM covers the marketing side: ads, content and air cover for named accounts. Account-based selling is the sales side: mapping the buying committee and opening conversations. The strongest programmes run both on the same list.
Do I need ABM software to start?
No. You need an agreed account list, tiers and an owner for each account. The free templates in this hub cover that. Software earns its keep later, when coordination across many accounts becomes the bottleneck.
