What Is a Target Account List? Meaning and How to Build One

A target account list is the agreed, named set of companies a sales team has chosen to pursue, selected against written criteria and sized to the team's capacity.

Short answer. A target account list (TAL) is the written list of companies you have decided to pursue by name. Each row is a company, chosen against an ideal customer profile, scored, tiered and assigned an owner. It differs from a lead list in kind: you choose the companies; a lead list is whoever responded.

What is a target account list?

A target account list is a decision, written down: these companies, not others, get our selling effort this quarter. It is the founding document of account-based work. The tiers, the buying committee maps, the cadences and the reporting all hang off it, which is why a weak list sinks everything built on top.

The test of a real TAL is that someone chose it and can say why. A spreadsheet of five thousand companies exported from a database is not a target account list; it is a lead list with ambitions.

For the selection methods and tools in one place, see the account-based selling topic hub.

What goes on a target account list?

One row per company, and enough columns to make the list workable rather than decorative: the account name, the fit score and the reason for it, the tier, the trigger or timing evidence, the named people you intend to reach, the owner, the current stage and the next step with a date.

The free target account list template has the full column set with worked rows, and our post on building a target account list walks through filling it.

How do you choose the accounts?

Three filters, in order.

  1. An ideal customer profile. Written criteria for the companies you serve best: industry, size, geography and the problem you solve. The free ICP Builder produces one.
  2. Knock-outs. Rules that remove accounts no matter how attractive: wrong region, incompatible stack, conflict with an existing client.
  3. A score. The survivors ranked by fit and timing, so the list has an order. The Account Scoring Tool and the target account selection scorecard both do this.

The free Target Account List Builder turns your answers into a 25-row list framework, and the course Build Your Target Account List teaches the whole method, from sourcing candidates to knock-outs and scoring.

How long should a target account list be?

As long as your capacity, and no longer. Every account on the list is a promise of research, a mapped committee and several conversations; list more companies than your team has hours for and the promise quietly becomes a mail merge.

The arithmetic is unforgiving and worth doing. The lesson Capping the List to Your Capacity works it through, and the free Account Coverage Calculator does the sum from your team size and hours.

What is the difference between a target account list and a lead list?

Direction. A lead list is inbound by nature even when bought: it is a set of people who matched a query or responded to something. A target account list is chosen: a set of companies someone picked on purpose and will be asked about in a pipeline review.

Why this works better on named accounts

The target account list is where named-account work begins, so the common failure is building everything downstream of a list nobody chose. Run the test: pick five rows and ask who put each company there and why. If the answer is a database filter, the cadences and committee maps on top of it are decoration. In our own engagements the list is agreed with the client before any outreach, every account carries a reason and a tier, and the weekly report counts movement on those named companies and nothing else.

Common questions

What is a target account list in simple words?

The written list of companies your team has decided to pursue by name, each chosen for a reason, ranked and assigned an owner.

What does TAL stand for in sales?

Target account list: the named set of companies a team sells to deliberately, as opposed to a lead list of whoever responded.

How many accounts should be on a target account list?

As many as your team can genuinely research, map and work, which is usually far fewer than feels ambitious. Work the hours backwards: a seller with limited weekly outbound time can carry tens of accounts properly, not hundreds.

Where do I get the companies for the list?

From your own won deals, look-alikes of your best clients, trigger events such as expansions and new leadership, and your team's market knowledge. Databases help you complete the list; they should not choose it.

Does Intandemly build target account lists?

Yes. Every Intandemly engagement starts by agreeing the named account list with you, against written criteria, before any outreach begins. The free tools on this page are the same methods, published.
