Build your ICP

Section 1: Who we serve best
e.g. private hospitals, not all of healthcare
Section 2: The problem we solve for them
One sentence a customer would say
Job posts, filings, news, tools in use, public complaints
Describe it. Add a number only if a customer gave you one
Section 3: What must be true for us to win
Roles, not names
Section 4: Our best customers today
Section 5: Who we walk away from (knock-outs)e.g. below the size band, a market we cannot serve

Checks

  • Add at least one knock-out. A profile that excludes nobody describes a market, not a customer.
  • Name at least two customers, so the common traits are a pattern and not one story.
  • Add an outside signal. Without one you cannot tell whether an account has the problem before you speak to it.

How the profile works

Fill it in with sales, marketing and whoever owns delivery in the same room. Then list candidate accounts, remove every one that hits a knock-out, and score the rest. An ICP is finished when it has produced a ranked list of company names.

Why this works on named accounts

An ideal customer profile describes a type of company, and nobody can sell to a type. It earns its place when it produces a list of named companies in priority order, with a rule for who is left off. On a broad list an ICP is a filter for a database. On a named list it is the agreement between sales, marketing and delivery about which accounts get the team's hours this quarter.

Common questions

What is an ideal customer profile?

A one-page statement of which companies you serve best, the problem you solve for them and who you walk away from.

How is an ICP different from a buyer persona?

An ICP describes a company. A persona describes a person inside it. Start with the company: the people come from mapping the buying committee.

What do I do with it when it is finished?

Use it to score a list of named accounts. A profile that does not end in company names is still a description of a type.

Is anything I type saved or sent?

It stays in this browser. Nothing is sent to Intandemly.
