What Is SDR as a Service? Meaning, What You Get and How to Judge a Provider

SDR as a service is an outsourcing model where a provider supplies trained sales development representatives, with their management, data and tools, to run outbound prospecting for your company for a monthly fee.

Short answer. SDR as a service means renting the outbound function instead of hiring it. A provider supplies the SDRs, their manager, data and tools for a monthly fee and books meetings for your sales team. It starts faster than hiring, and quality turns on whether the SDR is shared or dedicated and who owns the data.

What does SDR as a service mean?

An SDR, a sales development representative, is the person who opens conversations with potential buyers and books first meetings. SDR as a service is the staffing model that rents that role instead of hiring it: the provider employs the SDRs, manages them, supplies the data and tooling and points the whole unit at your market for a monthly fee.

The pitch is speed and packaging. Hiring your own SDR takes months of recruiting, ramp and management; the service model promises a working outbound function in weeks, with the manager and the tech stack included in the price.

For the wider subject of buying outbound, see the sales outsourcing and SDRs topic hub.

What do you get with SDR as a service?

A typical package bundles five things.

  1. The SDRs. One or more trained reps working your market.
  2. Management. A team lead who runs their day, reviews their calls and covers absence.
  3. Data. Contact sourcing and list building against your buyer profile.
  4. Tooling. Sequences, dialler, sending infrastructure and often the domains outreach runs from.
  5. Reporting. A weekly or monthly account of activity and meetings booked.

The word that matters most in any proposal is not in that list: shared or dedicated. A dedicated SDR works only your market and learns it; a shared SDR splits the week across several clients and works from a thinner script. Both are sold under the same label, at very different levels of quality.

How is SDR as a service priced?

Almost always as a monthly retainer, usually with a one-off setup fee and a minimum term, and sometimes as a hybrid with a fee per meeting on top. Rates vary widely with market, seniority of the targets and whether the SDR is shared or dedicated, so a quoted price means little on its own. Published figures, with sources and dates, are collected in our outsourced SDR cost guide.

The comparison that matters is not the retainer but the first-year cost per qualified meeting, across the options you actually have. The free SDR Cost Calculator puts an outsourced service, an in-house hire and AI SDR software on one table, in your currency, using only figures you enter.

SDR as a service or hiring your own SDR?

The service usually wins the first months: no recruiting, no ramp salary, a manager included and a function that can be switched off with notice. The in-house hire can win later, because the knowledge compounds in your own company rather than a provider's, and because a good SDR who stays becomes your next account executive.

The honest comparison is arithmetic, not preference: first-year cost per qualified meeting, including the hidden lines on each side. The hire adds commission, benefits, tools, data and the manager's time; the service adds the setup fee and the meetings that turn out unqualified. Run both through the calculator before deciding, and read in-house SDR vs account-based selling for the third option both comparisons skip.

What should you check before signing with a provider?

Six questions expose most weak providers before the contract does.

  1. Shared or dedicated, and if shared, across how many clients?
  2. Who writes the messages, and will you see them before they are sent?
  3. Whose domains does the outreach run from, and what happens to their reputation?
  4. Who owns the lists and the data when the engagement ends?
  5. What is the written definition of a qualified meeting?
  6. What is reported apart from activity and meeting counts?

The outsourced SDR contract checklist turns these into 30 contract terms with the clauses to ask for in writing. If you are mapping providers in a particular market, our guide to outsourced SDR companies in the UK shows what the landscape looks like in one of them.

Is SDR as a service the same as account-based selling?

No, and the difference is the unit of work. SDR as a service is organised around meetings: a rep works a wide list, one person at a time, and the output is booked calls. Account-based selling is organised around named companies: the people who must agree are mapped, several conversations run in parallel and the output is accounts opened.

The models suit different sales. Many similar buyers and a short cycle suit the meeting unit. Few large buyers, long cycles and buying committees suit the account unit, where one booked call is a start rather than a result. Our SDR and outbound outsourcing page explains how we run the SDR function account by account, and outsourced SDR vs a dedicated consultant sets the two models side by side.

Why this works better on named accounts

The service model's economics push towards sharing: one SDR across several clients, one playbook across several markets, volume as the proof of work. On a named account list that trade runs the wrong way, because the list is finite and every careless touch spends your reputation with a company you chose. A shared rep who rotates off your account takes the knowledge of it with them. That is why an Intandemly engagement is built the other way round: a dedicated consultant works your named accounts with our platform behind them, on a monthly engagement, and the report counts accounts, the people engaged in each and the pipeline they produce rather than a meeting tally.

Common questions

What is SDR as a service in simple words?

Renting your outbound prospecting instead of hiring for it. A provider supplies the SDRs, their manager, data and tools for a monthly fee, and they book first meetings for your sales team.

How much does SDR as a service cost?

There is no single honest figure. Pricing is usually a monthly retainer plus a setup fee, and it varies with market, targets and whether the SDR is shared or dedicated. Published ranges, with sources and dates, are in our outsourced SDR cost guide.

Is SDR as a service the same as appointment setting?

They overlap. Appointment setting names the task, booking first meetings. SDR as a service names the staffing model that performs it, the rented rep with management and tools included. One provider can be described as both.

Shared or dedicated SDR: which is better?

Dedicated, if the quality of each conversation matters, because the rep learns your market and only your market. Shared is cheaper per month. Ask which you are getting, and across how many clients a shared rep is split.

Is Intandemly an SDR as a service company?

No. Intandemly is the account-based selling company: a platform plus a dedicated consultant working your named accounts on a monthly engagement. We report on accounts and pipeline and do not promise a number of meetings.
