An Alternative to Appointment Setting for Enterprise Deals

Appointment setting services book first meetings with individual contacts and are paid for the meetings. In an enterprise deal one meeting rarely moves the account, because several people decide. The alternative is account-based selling: choose the accounts, map the buying committee and build conversations with several people in each, counted as account inroads.

What do appointment setting services do well?

They fill a calendar. A team works a contact list by phone, email and LinkedIn and books first conversations for your sellers. Where one person can decide and the sale closes in a call or two, that is exactly the right job to hand over, and the price per meeting is easy to judge.

Why does a booked meeting fall short in an enterprise deal?

A meeting tells you one person gave you half an hour. It does not tell you whether they can approve the purchase, who else must agree or whether the company has the problem this year. Single meetings in large accounts tend to end in one of three ways: the contact has no authority, the contact goes quiet, or the contact moves on. In each case the account is back to zero, though the meeting was counted.

What is an account inroad?

An inroad is a position inside an account that survives the loss of any one person. We use a three-part test: two-way conversations with at least two people who have a part in the decision, a problem someone at the company has named in their own words, and a dated next step that involves someone new. A meeting can start an inroad. It is not one on its own.

What changes when you work the account, not the meeting?

Three things. The list is written first, by company name, and is short enough to research. Every first conversation ends with the question "who else should be part of this?", and that person is approached with their own reason. And the report changes from meetings booked to accounts in outreach, accounts with two or more people engaged, and pipeline.

When is appointment setting the better fit?

Choose appointment setting when one person signs, the deal closes in weeks, the market holds thousands of similar buyers and your sellers are short of first conversations, not stuck in the middle of deals. If your sellers have plenty of first meetings and too few second ones, more meetings will not fix it.

How does Intandemly work?

Intandemly is an account-based selling company, and has been since April 2017, almost ten years. You get a platform plus a dedicated account-based selling consultant, supported by researchers, working a named account list agreed with you. We do not sell meetings and we do not promise a number of them. We report on five KPIs: outreach accounts, coverage rate, active buying committees, active conversations and the value of pipeline generated.

Which one fits your deals

Choose an appointment setting service when

  • One person can approve the purchase
  • The sale closes in one or two calls
  • Your sellers are short of first conversations
  • A missed buyer is easily replaced

Choose account-based selling when

  • Several people must agree before anything is signed
  • First meetings happen, second ones do not
  • You can name the accounts you want to open
  • Deals stall inside the account with no clear "no"
From a published case study

In our published Bankai Infotech case study the funnel reads: 1,985 connections, 818 accounts reached, 21 accounts penetrated. The last line counts accounts, not meetings.

Common questions

Is Intandemly an appointment setting company?

No. Intandemly is an account-based selling company. Conversations with buyers are part of the work, but we are engaged to open named accounts, not to deliver a number of meetings.

Do you guarantee a number of meetings?

No. A meeting count rewards the easiest contact to reach, not the right one. We agree an account list with you and report on the accounts.

What is the best alternative to appointment setting for enterprise sales?

Work the account, not the calendar: a short named list, a mapped buying committee and planned second and third conversations in each account.

We already use an appointment setting service. Do we have to stop?

Not always. Keep it for the segment where one person decides. Move your largest target accounts onto a named list and work them separately.
